Pet Loss Support Literature
Many books have been written to help people
deal with the loss of a parent, a spouse,
a sibling or a friend. Although not as common,
we have identified several books which have
been written specifically to help pet owners
prepare for and cope with the loss of their
beloved animal companion. A number of these
books have been written specifically to help
children cope with the loss.
1. Good-Bye My Friend (by Mary and Herb Montgomery)
Offers consolation at the time of death and
comforts the pet owner throughout the grieving
process. Feelings common to loss are explored:
denial, sadness, anger, guilt, etc. Practical
suggestions are offered on such matters as
finding outlets for grief, helping children
deal with grief, and selecting a memorial.
A dedication page for inscribing the pet's
name makes the book ideal for giving to anyone
who has lost an animal friend.
2. A Final Act of Caring (by Mary and Herb Montgomery)
Explains the euthanasia procedure in comforting,
non-clinical language and offers guidance
at a time when painful decisions must be made.
Also covered are ways to pay last respects,
help children deal with the loss, and memorialize
a cherished animal.
3. Your Aging Pet (by Mary and Herb Montgomery)
Discusses the changes that come with age and
ways to meet the needs of older animals. Suggestions
are made for simple adaptations that enable
animals with arthritic joints and other age-related
problems to enjoy months and maybe even years
of contented living.
